Firstly the device doesn't prompt you to set the time and date on start-up which is nice if you just want to get straight to using it, but when it comes to looking for your files it can get a bit confusing if you haven't manually done this. PIN access isn't automatically set up when you start up the device for the first time so you will need to go into the menu and activate it, but this was a straight forward process.Ī couple of things I would say to be aware of, not as a criticism of the device but for ease of use. If you attempt to connect the device to a computer without entering the PIN you aren't able to access any of the files which is great. I really like this security feature - the device requests the PIN every time I turn on the device, and it will automatically turn off after around 50-10 minutes of activity so if you were to forget to turn it off and leave it somewhere then your files are still protected. The PIN setting was easy to locate and activate. When I first played back a recording it sounded horribly crackly through the headphones that came with the device, but as soon as I switched to my own headphones the audio quality was great. The headphones supplied are not good quality so don't assume that the audio quality is as heard through these if you're using the headphones on your first listen. The audio comes through clearly on the built-in speakers. Playback quality on the device is also very good. I haven't tested the internal mic in this context so can't compare. However using it did give me some peace of mind with regards to audio quality when recording meetings that were happening virtually. The sound quality through the built-in mic is actually pretty good so although I bought the Olympus speaker I probably didn't need it. You can just switch it on and start recording straight away.
